Who? What? When? Where? And Why?
Since the beginning of humanity, two types have existed; Other Half Humans and Non-Other Half Humans. The latter is theorized to have evolved from the former in a quick time span which means there isn’t much of a definite answer to “Who came first?” Despite this, equality is questionable as the population is half and half with a little more than a quarter of Other Half Humans having magic abilities.
But what are Other Half Humans?
“Other Half Human” comes from the dated phrase “Humans with Other Halves of the Soul,” one that nobody uses due to its length. To put it simply, human souls are split into two. Half of the soul is inside the body while the other half is inside a crystal they are born with, spiritually attached to, and must hold onto at all times. This half of the soul is typically referred to as an “Other Half Entity,” due to organic material being found within the crystals.

How can you tell by looks?
The notable traits of Other Half Humans are; crystals, magic, hair glints, and a wide variety of eye colors.
-Other Half Crystals, aka pendants, are considered organic due to developing in the womb alongside the fetus; crystals start off on the fragile side after birth and slowly solidify until the age of twelve where they will fully harden. These crystals are highly durable and unlikely to break accidentally thus purposely breaking one is deemed strongly immoral.
Crystals can be any color or shade except for black and white. Black crystals are ones containing entities that have died but death can be reversed so long as not too much time has passed. White crystals are entirely dead and vacant, making revival impossible. However, these can be used as donor crystals used for repairing living ones.
-Magic is one of the primary characteristics that Other Half Humans are known for but it is also a trait that causes unrest amongst the world. Not all are born with powers but those that are will be seen as either superior to others or as a threat to some.
Other Half Magic can be inherited through genetics or by crystal fusing; things such as premature births and/or illness in childhood can affect one’s ability to bear magic which means fusing may not always guarantee power.
-Hair glints are splotches of color that will appear in the hair of an Other Half Human when exposed to light. Typically they are bright and vibrant in children and over time darken and lose their vibrancy throughout adulthood but this is not always the case. Not all Other Half Humans are born with hair glints and hair dye is a popular trend among those wanting to fit in with peers.
-Many Other Half Humans are born with vibrant colored eyes that are usually the same color as their glint but stay mostly vibrant throughout their life whereas glints darken. Eye color may also match crystal color which can lead to the rarity of someone having only one color for their crystal, eyes, and glint.
-Glint color and eye color are only passed from parent to child whereas crystal color can be entirely random or inherited.
♢ Ohemiology ♢
The Inner Workings
Ohemiology is the study of Other Half Humans. Its primary focus is how magic and crystals work. Crystals may also be studied by a gemologist but ohemiologists focus more on the organic aspect and connection to the body.
Those born with magical abilities can carry multiple magic alleles passed from their ancestors but only one or two power types will be the most dominant. These genes serve a purpose for building the DNA that instructs the brain, crystal, and heart to work together in the process of making magic cells.
Magic can develop in children between the ages of twelve and fourteen after the crystal grows to full size and solidifies. At first, magic is difficult to handle and the discovery of one’s powers is usually an accident depending on the type. However, with basic training, it can be managed. Many youth, particularly students, are required to wear locks to prevent any magic mishaps while they still learn to handle their powers. This process can take up to a year depending on the amount of effort put into learning basic control.
There are dozens of different powers Other Half Humans can possess but they are sorted into two main categories of magic; Elemental and Manipulative. The Manipulative category can then be split into two sub-categories of Physical and Psychological.
Those with Elemental magic only have one primary power but have the ability to inherit a weaker secondary through pendant fusing which will then need to be cautiously trained over time. With enough determination, one can even turn their secondary into their primary.
Those with Manipulative magic have a primary power and a high chance of a weaker secondary power, the most common being Telekinesis. Much like Elemental, one can train their secondary power to become their primary power.
Magic heavily relies on nutrients found in the body. For example, Elemental magic such as water and nature related powers are notorious for causing dehydration in Other Half Humans whereas Manipulative magic relies on energy as a whole, keeping more of a balance in nutrients.

Extra Trivia!
-Pendant Fusing is the process of fusing a deceased Other Half Human’s crystal with a living one’s. This procedure is common amongst loved ones but unfortunately many people with ill intents (such as magic traffickers) will purposefully hunt down and murder those with magic in the hopes of harnessing that power for themselves through fusing.
Fusing may also be done with entirely dead donor crystals to repair living crystals that have suffered damage but not complete shattering.
-Crystal Shattering is considered one of the cruelest and most inhumane acts one could commit against an Other Half Human. Although it will not immediately kill them, it leaves them in a deteriorating state where over the span of a year or two, their body and mind will go through the process of painfully shutting down before dying.
-Lost Souls are theorized to be those that could have been Other Half Humans but were unfortunately separated from their crystal at birth, leaving them as Non-Other Half Humans. Although many wonder how these humans survive without their crystals, the running theory is that where there was no time in which the crystal could bond with the baby, the soul never truly split apart.
